Some of them are local, from Chengdu, some of them are from other parts of China and some of them are from the far-land, Germany, France for example. Through this exhibition, an intimate conversation bearing the name of art, we hope to explore the definition of space, be that as inter-personal or simply the distance between an object of art and the viewer, in order to reflect the relationship between the self and the others, the self and the society, the self and the era, the self and the history, even the self and the Art writ-large. This should be very meaningful.
Art originates in Man, according to Hegel, relies on sense perception, and due to our interpretational differences, distance exists always among different entities regardless whether it’s physical, psychological or spiritual.
To quote one line from a poem:
’you, looking at me for sometime, looking at the cloud for sometime
feeling, when you’re looking at me there’s a great distance between us, and so near it is between you and the cloud when you’re looking at it.’
By having the sense of distance, lonesome poet GU Chen accomplished composing such words, and when the distance was distorted, he became a murderer.
Art as the great vehicle of communication by nature rejects eccentricity. It encompasses always the environment and having the subject to be in the scene interacting with everything around itself at the same time having everything around the subject interacting with each other, everything taking measure of the constantly shifting distance among each other. Through this kind of interaction reaches a kind of recognition, furthermore a kind of appreciation also emerges, thus forms the intimacy among various subjects.
Join this kind of measuring, your opinion is as valuable as the artists’ statements.
