Pan Dehai’s Self- Narration
The idea of creating my recent works “City Series” originated from my feeling and thought about the interesting relation between man and society, and my observation of ever changing people living in cities. In today’s China, road is a main symbol of city. The public traffic road is no longer the traditional “street”. This transformation fully reflects the public relation between man and society and the inseparable relation between man and city. This newly developed relation is gradually formed in our daily life.
I see that we are all rushing about in the big city, striving for living, for a better life, never ending. We are submerged by numberless high-rises, and in the huge non-stopping running cities, numerous living beings are pulled by some kind of intangible power which beyond their control, working around the clock, without no ending. People do not know what they want or believe, neither what they are living for; survival pressure and competition has already turned them into machines. Stream of people, goods, and cars, and innumerable large, medium and small vehicles are mingled in the city. Life is like a war, with no starting and ending. The air, nature and living creatures are contaminated and destroyed. Human beings are endlessly repeating their everyday activities, not knowing when to stop. People get nervous and panic, wondering, but never managing to find where our homes are.
What will the road, car, pedestrian, our life and home be in the future? That pure man of myself, and all of the others, where have you gone?
From 1980s till today, I witness the social changes from past to present. Our life is getting better and better, no matter the food, clothes, or daily goods. However, we are also experiencing various changes of ourselves and the environment. We cannot predict the future, but we may find the result in the “city”.
