The earthquake on 12.5.08 came without warning in Sichuan Province. It shocked all the artists who had arrived in Chengdu to prepare for the inspection of “The Sudden Change” project in the Three Gorges Dam area. During the after-shocks we worked on the 7th floor of a building, and so many times we had to run down to the ground as a precaution. At the time I thought people were like small dust particles being swept away by nature.
Because the rail transport was giving priority for aid supplies the victims most affected by the earthquake, we had to travel by bus to Wanzhou. We arrived only to find another disaster. A destroyed river lay in front of us. The water is colored by pollution because the river does not flow as strong as once did. We were like sailors on such a big reservior in the section between Wanzhou and Wushan. The Yangzi river is not as beautiful as it was before. The river has been dammed and the waterlevel will rise to depth of 175M. More than 1 million residents have had to move to the other locations. And a range of historical remains and cultral sites have already been submerged. With this the ecological system of the Three Gorges has been destroyed.
If people only take care of their own development, this is a risk for our future. Nobody knows what will happen in time, who will be pumnished, nature? human beings? or the future?
