佳佳的作品表达了当下城市生活的某种古怪、不安的情绪,他在大大的画布上放任自信地、用如行云流水般的色彩描绘着那些由可爱而无声的面孔组成的山水风景画卷。
你也许会对他的中国根产生兴趣,佳佳作品的表现形式虽然当代,但其根基深受传统中国绘画的影响;一个个小小的面孔代表着色彩边缘世界的混乱,诸如无胳膊、无腿的色块,他们除了凝望似乎束手无策。就像我们人类一样,他们看起来虽像卡通人物但实际上也有一颗童稚的心,在这个充满消费的世界里忍受着痛苦;一些作品出现了比萨和炒锅、还有墙、屋子和梯子上的战舰等等……
作品在大量应用了中国传统山水画法的同时也引入了很多当代元素:动画书、电脑游戏和电影等。作品的立点是传统西方的童话故事和古典中国故事的结合;提取其精华并将两者用抽象画派形式表现,把中国叙事般的山水画风与一种童稚幼趣、电脑游戏等的错觉因素结合。
为了平衡画面中物体、形状以及山水之间的关系,佳佳创造了一种抽象表现主义的绘画风格,即风景与静物的有机融合和交织。
Jia Jia Wang doesn't feel a clear notion of home - always moving between two radically different cultures, forever looking for his place. Within the paintings, the artist presents his own world: a constructed third space and a possibility to explore his heritage and identity. The work draws a lot from traditional Chinese landscape painting whilst countering it with imagery from more modern sources such as comic books, computer games and films. The starting points of the paintings are traditional western fairy tales and ancient Chinese stories. Extracts are cut and pasted together resembling a collage of painterly references: Chinese style epic mountain-scapes mixed with playful references to early platform games and give a false sense of naivety and childishness.
These invented spaces contain fragments of everyday objects, which break up the pictorial space and distort the perceptions of scale in almost a haphazard or childish approach. The colorful abstract rock like shapes act like building blocks in the paintings as well as giving the impression that the surface is fracturing, crumbling within itself. Ladders and staircases break up the space and rainbows act like bridges across the scattered terrains as the imagery appears, disappears and melts into the fairytale-esque dreamscape.
By balancing out the relationship between objects, shapes, mountains and drips, the artist creates a cross genre painting as abstract painting, landscape and still life are mixed and forced together.
