Turner Prize Shortlist Announced

Agence France-Presse reports that Dexter Dalwood, Susan Philipsz, Angela de la Cruz, and the Otolith Group comprise the shortlist for the 2010 Turner Prize.

Dalwood, a Bristol-born painter, is known for work that revisits scenes where famous people have lived and died. The forty-nine-year-old artist has painted, for instance, the interior of the Seattle greenhouse where Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain committed suicide. Dalwood’s work draws upon “art history as well as contemporary cultural and political events,” Tate Britain said in a statement.

The forty-four-year-old Glasgow-born artist Philipsz is best known for creating sound installations using her own voice. De la Cruz, who lives and works in London, breaks and folds her paintings and then displays them in corners and doorways or on the gallery floor.

The Otolith Group consists of London artists Anjalika Sagar, forty-two, and Kodwo Eshun, forty-four. They have worked on a variety of projects, including a film depicting sweatshop workers in India. Tate Britain praised the way they “investigate overlooked histories through archival and documentary material.”

The Turner Prize was set up in 1984 to celebrate new developments in contemporary art. It is awarded to any artist aged under fifty––born, living, or working in Britain––for “an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work” over the past twelve months.

Each of the shortlisted artists is given approximately $7,500, while the winner––to be announced on December 6––goes home with around $38,000. Work by the four shortlisted artists will be on display at Tate Britain from October 4. Past winners of the award include Damien Hirst (1995), Chris Ofili (1998), and Richard Wright (2009).
