Daniel Birnbaum Appointed Director of Moderna Museet
The Swedish minister for culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth has appointed Daniel Birnbaum as the new director of Stockholm’s Moderna Museet, reports the Swedish Wire.
Birnbaum, the artistic director of the last Venice Biennale, is a philosopher, critic, and curator. He was previously director for the International Artists Studio Program in Stockholm, IASPIS, and was most recently the rector at Städelschule Staatliche Hochschule in Frankfurt am Main. Since 1998, he has also been a contributing editor of Artforum, with which he has been working regularly since 1995.
“I am delighted that the government has made a decision regarding my successor,” said the museum’s current director Lars Nittve, who steps down on October 31. “It seems to be a solution most likely to assure a continuous development of the Moderna Museet’s unique character.”
The Sydsvenskan reports that Birnbaum, who has not previously been director of a museum, referred to his appointment as “a great honor,” saying, “It is without doubt the biggest challenge I have ever given me in to. There is no museum in the world I would rather head.” He begins his appointment on November 1.
